it will remain to be seen if just like M-5 the M-9 designations is dropped as Metro North has opted to not buy M-9's
What I dont like about this is that the LIRR ESA cars will be termed M-9A, which historically was the MNR designation of the Metropolitans (odd # series) Especially since they wont be service compatible with the M-9, they should truly be M-11.

Whatever fleet MNR uses to replace the M-3A will be the next odd number at the time, probably M-11

And when do you think that will enter service? Not for 10-15 years at least. At which point the M3s will be nearly 50 years old.

What is LIRR's reason for calling theirs M-9A instead of just M9, or are you talking about a specific group of M-9 cars that will be dedicated only to ESA Service?

maybe that question should be answered in LIRR M-9 tread.

Originally wanted to be the same M9, but purchased with ESA money (federal funded.) The Federal funded cars can't have the build in NY provision, so its a separate procurement altogether, with slim hopes they'll be the same as an M9, hence 'A'

So BuddR32, you're saying a separate contract and possibly a different manufacturer? And how many of each type are we talking about? This could get very interesting.......... And yes, maybe we'd best talk about this in the LIRR topic as Dutch suggested. LOL
