What purpose was the movable platforms ?

If you look a few photos farther down from that one, you'll see the answer: the gap between the platform and the subway cars on curves was too wide for people to step across.

And what station was this?

Looks like Haymarket.

I wondered about the third to last and second to last pictures in the last set, titled "Tremont St. subway construction". Not sure of that location, looks almost like the portal between Haymarket and North Station.
