There is no reason to retrofit equipment with AC propulsion, or trainline silvers with 1800's. The first set of silvers to go will be the 1500's which leaves the 16s and 17s to run together. By the time the 16's have to go, the new order of red and orange line cars should be well underway. The silverbirds are still going strong and when the 1800's were having severe propulsion issues (with 22 cars OOS), the silvers picked up the slack and ran the line almost flawlessly, with few delays due to lack of equipment.

Ditto. There's never been a need for this and there never will be, so why waste a huge amount of money? The T has already put the next Red/Orange cars out for bids anyway.

The Capital Investment Program documents on the MBTA website states that the design for new Red/Orange fleet will not begin until fiscal year 2009:
Orange Line Fleet Procurement
This project will fund the design of the next generation vehicle for the Orange Line. In addition, the Authority will use elements of this design for the procurement of replacement No. 1 cars on the Red Line.

That may be, but they already advertised in all of the local papers for bids. The process has begun.

That bid is for exactly what I posted - engineering services related to the design and procurement of the new cars, not a bid for the cars themselves. The T's capital plan calls for the design phase to stretch from 2009 to 2013.

Either way, the T has started the process to replace those cars, right?

What the current bid means is that they are starting the process of designing the new fleets. A second bid for the actual purchase of the new cars will follow, but that is still some years away. I'm not sure they even have the bond money yet to pay for them.

Why are we nitpicking something that I didn't even say? Can we move back on topic?

Anyone know if they are getting new solid state propulsion controllers like the SEPTA BSS K-Cars or just a rehab of the existing systems?

It would just be a rehab of the existing motor controllers, as they are used in MU service with the older 01500/01600 series cars, which are almost the same as the 01700s

And they are cerianly not gonna get the same treatment as WMATA's 2000 & 3000-series which means conversion from DC to AC Propulsion motors whic would have meant the 01700s would then be running as MUs with the 01800s if the 01700s were rebuilt like that, but of course the MBTA is far different than the Washington Metro.

Don't forget, that on the green line, DC propulsion Type 7s always trainline with AC Type 8s.
