Tower A

Reliable sources say that Tower A was closed/vacated Wednesday March 27th. The operator and bridge controls
were moved into a leased trailer mounted on staging (for river viability) on the same side of the Charles and tracks
as the tower is.

Tower A will probably be razed at some point this year as its too far gone to save/rehab. End of an era to say the least!

The new Temp Tower was occupied last night. I noticed they were using it last night when I took Train 119 out of North Station.

Given how in recent years it needed wooden braces to keep it from collapsing, demolishing Tower A probably won't be hard. It's sad to lose another Boston rail landmark, though.

The tower was sadly neglected over the years. It took more abuse during the Big Dig construction, especially with
the temporary Bailey Bridge over its north end raining water and snowmelt on it. There was talk of trying to
preserve it as an exhibit for the Charles River walking/bike paths, but it never got traction. Things so got bad that
the Northside (ex-B&M) train dispatchers, who were moved to its rehabbed north end after leaving Billerica in
September 1987, were at the point of demanding to be moved out of there. Since then more and more of the
tower was closed off, leaving just the the operators/bridge control room open.
