Service is running, albeit with numerous delays. Apparently there was a signal problem around midday that shut down all service out of South Station, and the north side lines are running up to an hour behind schedule.

Not sure what line it was on, but channel 7 just had a story about a elderly couples car getting stuck on the tracks and bystanders pulled them out of the car just before a commuter rail train hit their car. They are all safe, car, not so much.

Looks like there are signal issues on the Newburyport / Rockport line right now. They just sent out a blanket alert saying that all trains are expected to experience delays, they will send out individual alerts as needed.

South station is a mess because of "Amtrak signal" issues. I am sure this is covered elsewhere, but wondering why the MBTA can't take over the signaling here - it seems to be a colossal failure point.

Just got this text alert:
Six Newburyport/Rockport Line trains are cancelled tonight due to damage from historic tidal surge. Individual alerts will be sent.
No trains listed yet in the text alerts and the website only lists two.

Please list the rest MBTA so I can plan on which train to take home tonight.

Like this past Friday, why are the signal issues causing much more problems with the evening rush than the morning?

The #1 track (outbound) is closer to the ocean and got more wet.

Just kidding! I doubt that’s it. I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’m betting it’s because the delays are building up throughout the day, so by the time the PM peak comes along the ripple effect from earlier in the day has added up.

Close - in the morning 8 sets of equipment start out of Newburyport and Rockport, plus an empty set heads to Newburyport for 150. Those 9 trains only experience the delay in 1 direction as they come in to Boston - and they are more importantly (hopefully) on-time through the congestion at Beverly and Salem. If they are a little late for their next train it isn't as noticeable because it is an off peak train.

In the evening, there are trains out and running. They have experienced the delay outbound, and will experience the delay AGAIN inbound. If they do not have a generous turn (and most trains don't in the rush), they are likely already leaving Newburyport or Rockport late, making them late to Beverly/Salem. Compound this with the outbounds catching the delay PRIOR to their arrival at Salem, and you set up a first-come, first-serve operation with favor granted to the heavy outbound trains instead of the normally well-choreographed schedule. Now those inbound trains who made early trips are returning 20-30 minutes late and are already late for their next outbound train. You only see this at the very tail end of the inbound rush, but it starts about the middle of the evening.
