The Red Line 01500/01600/01700 series are Westinghouse units with DC cam traction control. Are they WH CAM or E-CAM? The former is the original Westinghouse cam control system dating from late 1950s, while E-Cam is a microprocessor-based electronic upgrade first introduced in 1991 (after demo testing in the late 80s at NYCT on a R36 unit). Obviously the cars when delivered in '69-70 and '88 were of the regular cam type, but did they ever get the digital upgrade to E-Cam? BBD (successor to Westinghouse's Transportation Division in Pittsburgh) offers E-CAM today as "MITRAC E-CAM" and also offers it as an aftermarket upgrade, kit or retrofit for older equipment.

The Red Line might be the very last traditional Westinghouse DC cars with pneumatic static state traction control still operating in daily service, since the last Westinghouse R36s came off the Flushing Line in 2002-early 2003.
