The Providence Journal is reporting that there will be free train service to the Rhode Island Air Show in June
WARWICK, R.I. — The state will run free trains from Providence and T.F. Green Airport to Quonset State Airport in North Kingstown during the annual Quonset Air Show next month, the chief executive of the state airport agency said Wednesday afternoon at a public meeting.

Parking at the airport's commuter rail station on Jefferson Boulevard will be free for the air show service, according to Peter A. Frazier, chief executive of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, the state agency that runs Green, Quonset and four other state airports.

The air show, run by the National Guard Association of Rhode Island, also serves as an open house for the National Guard and as a fundraiser for Hasbro Children's Hospital. It is scheduled for June 11-12, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Since this service is being paid for by RIDOT, and being operated over Seaview tracks, it is assumed that MBTA equipment will be used.

This is an excellent idea. With the increased "security" measures of making everybody take a shuttle bus to parking that they did last year, getting out of the show was a complete disaster. In past years you could get in on the south side by parking on what is basically runway 5, but last year they didn't do it. Reducing any kind of load on shuttles, parking, and traffic at the show is always a good idea.

An interesting concept, perhaps such a service could be run on a regular or semi regular basis. Maybe connect with the Vineyard ferry in the summer.

WPRI has aired the schedule:

Providence Train:
8:44AM - Departs Providence
9:30AM - Arrives at Quonset

TF Green Train:
10:45AM - Departs TF Green
11:15AM - Arrives at Quonset

Return #1:
3:00PM - Departs Quonset
3:30PM - Arrives at TF Green
3:46PM - Arrives at Providence

Return #2:
4:50PM - Departs Quonset
5:20PM - Arrives at TF Green
5:36PM - Arrives at Providence

I'm assuming it's one set that they're pulling out of layover to run back and forth, and will be returned to layover once the trips are done.

Official press release here has completely different schedule than what is quoted above. It does say "updated" and the press release is dated 6/3/16 so they must have changed it in the past few days.

diburning wrote:Yes, they added a third train in each direction last Friday.
Is that indicative of anticipated demand? I hope it pans out.
