While riding my bike along the Southwest Corridor yesterday, I noticed a 30 foot or so long granite section of the old New Haven embankment. It was on the Mission Hill side of the corridor between Ruggles and Roxbury Crossing off of Mindoro St. Does anyone know the story behind this, why it wasn't demolished with the rest of the raised embankment?

Is this facing the tracks near the Wentworth Parking Lots? If its on the land directly behind the Mindoro St it is owned by the MBTA. From the Assessing Department: http://www.cityofboston.gov/assessing/s ... efault.asp

But I always just assumed it was part of the former industrial area around there, like the Houghton-Vienna Brewery, not part of the embankment. Check out:

In the stretch mentioned by NealG there are several lengths of stone retaining wall still in place (west side only). Quite a bit is visible from Terrace St. Some other places have wall remnants that were joined to buildings and, they also survived the construction.

Ok to go out on the obvious limb here but are they left over purposely so as to not have damaged foundations of nearby businesses at the time and or to prevent major damage to the enbankment? To me it looks like a case of leaving them in place and reinforcing them was cheaper than removal and correction of any new damage.
