Metro to launch SmartTrip mobile app

Here is another way Metro is behind in technology. VRE has had a mobile ticketing app since 2015, and now Metro just getting started on it.

Metro today announced that it is working with its fare payment vendor to become “mobile ready” by next year, enabling customers to pay for their Metro trip using a mobile device rather than a SmarTrip card.

As part Metro’s initiative to upgrade its fare collection system, Metro is also developing a new fare payment app that will allow customers a quick and easy way to pay and manage their SmarTrip account from anywhere.

I hope they're working w/MTA Maryland on the app, because it's the same system up in Baltimore (just called Charm Card) and there's a cross-honor agreement between MTA Maryland and WMATA on the cards.
