The big take away here is that Metro is considering shutting certain stations down up to 44 days straight in order to pull this off, "SafeTrack 2.0" here we go if this gets the green light...

As mentioned in the GGW post, Deanwood and Minnesota Ave had their platforms totally replaced without needing to completely close those stations. Selected station on the Red line had the over hanging portions replaced also without having to completely close the station.

Why bring in an option into the picture when you can execute an option that has proven to work and resulted in less disruption.

Metro Station Platform Gaps Pose Safety Risks, Riders Say

At the Braddock Road and Rhode Island Avenue Metro stations, riders have to step up or down at least 8 inches between the trains and the platforms. One rider said she tripped and was badly bruised. Others said the gaps pose a safety hazard.

I can't say that any of this comes as a surprise. I have seen these jacks at numerous stations, and it was pretty obvious that something different would need to be done.

A handful of stations have 3 tracks. I wonder if these can be repaired without completely shutting down the station.

If they are contemplating shutting down National Airport (one of the stations with 3 tracks) completely, would they contemplate scheduling this *after* the Dulles station is open?

Huh, I have never seen more than a 2-3 inch height difference between car and platform at Braddock, or more than a 4 inch gap. Is this a new problem within the last few months?

OK folks, I'm Going to throw some history at you.

WMATA originally planed to put heaters in the surface station platforms and at the top of entrance escalators that were not under cover to melt the snow and or ice. The heaters were installed in the mud job under the platform tiles at Rhode island Avenue. The heaters at Rhode island Avenue failed rather quickly. None of the stations that followed were fitted with them.

The rebar in the surface station structural slabs do not have epoxy coated rebar in them which is now standard in concrete road pavement, bridge decks, parapets and Jersey barriers. None of the Silver Line platform slabs have epoxy coated rebar in them. If memory serves some of the stations that had their platforms stabs partly or fully replaced were fitted with epoxy coated rebar.

Want to bet the use of non-coated rebar is in *all* stations? I won't be surprised if that's the case. Anything to save on construction costs.

They are starting to put some of this into action:

From Saturday, July 21, through Labor Day, Sept. 3, there will be no trains for 45 days at Rhode Island Avenue or Brookland-CUA.
and this
Metro also announced additional single-tracking and shutdowns of the Yellow, Blue, Orange and Silver lines coming later this year.

From Aug. 11 through Aug. 26, the Blue, Orange and Silver lines will single-track for 16 days through the heart of downtown.

The work in a curve between the McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations will significantly cut service for the entire Orange, Blue and Silver lines. Some trains will be redirected.

During that work, no riders on the Blue, Orange or Silver lines will qualify for rush-hour refunds from Metro due to the delays.

From Friday, Nov. 2, through Monday, Nov. 5, Metro will shut down the Reagan National Airport and Crystal City stations for switch and concrete repairs.
