Wmata's metroforward Facebook page has a post about the retirement and an image of a stripped 4k car on a flatbed truck being carried off. Also a link to a YouTube video. I'll post links when I'm not on mobile device.

How are the 1k more reliable than the 2k/3k????? That's crazy!

The 4K's have an internal glitch in their cab signal/automatic control system that cannot be repaired
As long as the 1K's are buried in consist,they are basicly trailers,and cannot lead.
