So you are saying tie-life is more a function of age in years than usage [# of axle crossings...]???

They degrade from exposure not from the loads placed upon them. The rate of degrading depends on the type and amount of exposure (contaminated ballast, drainage, direct sun light. NS routinely replaces the ties on their line that runs from Newark Delaware to Pokomoke City Maryland over here in the sand box. The line sees one train a day south of Harrington Delaware.

The reports also included myriad complaints familiar to those who follow Metro’s daily woes: Clogged drains. A loose third-rail insulator. A front flagman observed “in a sleeping position.
How long would that last in a real railroad?

WP is reporting that Safetrack may extend past its original 1 year deadline of March into June. Coordination problems and worker fatigue have contributed. The budget for the project has also been revised upwards. See https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/tr ... story.html

I found it intriguing that they would cut Silver Line service and have that line end at the Stadium-Armory pocket, and sending the Orange to Largo. The silver line already provides more trains during rush hours than the Orange, and it would prevent some confusion as the Silver line already goes to Largo anyway.

The reason for not using that pocket was a fear that operators would run a Red and foul the main line, at a location where the passing trains are running at a good speed. In short, they don't trust the operators to obey the Rule One. With the main line closed east of there, there's no such hazard.

While SBJ disagrees, that's the issue.

BTW, I was talking to an experienced rail operater at Cleveland RTA, and he said that there, any operator running is red is fired, period. No union outrage. It had happened a few weeks before.

He did say in some few cases, the operator is invited to reapply after a full year, but they would then be a new hire.
