i was reading the 2010 NEC Master Plan earlier and noticed that one of the proposed/planned improvements to the Wilimgton-Baltimore segment of the NEC is a yard at Edgewood for MARC's use.

I checked the MTA Projects page at http://mta.maryland.gov/transit-projects" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and there is no explicit mention of a yard at Edgewood on that page or in the MARC long-term planning document at http://mta.maryland.gov/sites/default/f ... -09-13.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. The only new yard mentioned is the one north of Perryville. Is a yard at Edgewood no longer needed?

Almost exactly three years ago I asked the MTA about this and received the following response:

Thank you for contacting MARC. I assume you are referring to the MARC Growth and Investment Plan which is a multi-phased, multi-year plan to triple the capacity of MARC, Maryland's commuter rail system. The MARC Growth and Investment plan establishes a series of improvement milestones for 2008, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2035. Unfortunately, some projects have been put on hold due to lack of funding on account of the economical downfall.

The Edgewood station project has actually started, but there are no plans for a new station in Aberdeen. The rail yard is still being developed, there are four sites that are being looked at and we will make a determination sometime this year on the best site, however, there is no funding for this project. We do not have any plans for additional service or trains to the Aberdeen area as of this time due to limited equipment and funding.

MTA also plans to implement positive train control, as required by law. And MTA plans to improve the track on the Camden and Brunswick Lines, build a facility for mid-day train storage in Washington, procure a maintenance facility at Riverside Yard in Baltimore, and build an interlocking at Hanson, just south of New Carrollton.

MTA to host Feb. 12 open house for MARC facility

Excerpt:
Maryland Transit Administration officials announced plans Tuesday to host a MARC train maintenance facility open house from 4 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 12 in Perryville.

The event at Minker Banquet Hall will give the community a chance to get a progress update on plans to purchase 121 acres near Route 7 and Mill Creek Road and build a $100 million MARC train maintenance facility, tentatively starting construction in 2018 and opening in 2020.

MTA officials briefed the Cecil County Council on the project during a work session Tuesday morning.

They said they selected the Perryville site after years of looking at potential sites along the corridor. Officials want to consolidate storage and maintenance facilities for the MARC commuter rail system that runs between Washington, D.C. and Perryville.
