I would be curious to know what Metra paid for these cars. Seeing how the article states disposal would cost them more than the other agency buying them.

Metra probably could strip them for spare parts even if they weren't planning on placing them back into service. I'm not sure how many Budd built Galley cars Metra still has in service, but the VRE will have only Nippon Sharyo built Galley cars in service once they retire these.

Metra is only allowed to pay, the amount for cars minus federal overhaul money and loans.
