In this application, the Thyristor seems to be used only as a protective device. See the explanation "right out of the book":

If it happens 3 times in any 1 minute span, the system locks out.

I trust they are correct. They have been doing a pretty good job thus far of keeping the documentation caught up with any known changes. My book is allegedly current as of 2/27/04.

Interesting. I'm guessing that's to kick things out if the brake chopper fails. I wonder what would cause that under motoring, though?
