Dont' know why, but I've always been a fan of the unusual look of this engine.

Anyone know how many still survive, and who has them?

Probably alot, saw a fresh-painted one today, along the NS Leigh Line

As for the railroads that own them, pretty much all still have some in service. They're kind of like the SD-40 series. In being pretty much universal, and very easily ID'ed

Well, it depends on whether you're talking about unmodified GP30s, or if you're willing to include the ones that have been rebuilt with upgraded engines and new electrical systems (BNSF has several like that) or the ones that have been rebuilt as road slugs (CSX).

I've seen BNSF and CSX GP30s. I also saw some of the ones mentioned by PRRGuy such as DRGW 3011 and Crail 2233 at the Penn. RR Mus. and SOO 700

BNSF has a large fleet of unmodified GP30's left over from the ATSF fleet. Occasionally one serves as power for the local based out of Lawrence, KS. Unfortunately I've never got a picture of one at the station. I will keep an eye out - I'm on 4(13) tomorrow at o-dark-thirty en route to CHI, then return on 3(18).

They look pretty much like stock GP30s on the outside, but didn't they receive 645 engines in the early 80s (as Chessie GP30s did at the same time)? And hasn't BNSF retired those now? They still have their ex-BN GP39E/M/Vs, many of which were GP30s.

Yes the ATSF GP30's have been retired.
