For me it would have to be the 4000-4300 H.P. SD70 series of locomotives,especially when GM/EMD announced back in December,1988 they wouldn't produce the SD70 series model.

May not be the best EMD locomotive built, but I think the SW8 "Pup" was pretty cool. Their home on the LV was on the Hazleton Branch in "Anthracite Country". They survived into the R&N! :-)

Switchers: SW1200, SW1500, MP15AC.
4 motors: BL2, GP30 (love that cool roof line), GP40X.
6 motors: SD24 (Hi Hood), SD45.

If we are talking about the best 40series(GP/SD/F)
Favorite is the SD45 and SD45T-2
Least favorite is the SD70MAC

I would say that the best EMD diesels were the GP-7s and 9s. They cemented EMD's position as the lead builder of diesels for decades. Railroads that bought those units they were served well for years.

As far as my favorite EMD it would have to be the F-3. I just love the look of those F units, they looked great on the point of a freight or passenger train.

SD7 in original condition...for the win! Lots of second choice favorites. SD40-2/GP7-9/ SD9/ E8...you get the picture!

Best EMD for a tall person:GP-30. Best EMD for a medium TV or van train two GP-38-2's. Best EMD for the big trains SD40-2,HANDS DOWN!. BEST EMD for the gadgets and MASSIVE tractive effort: SD80-MAC. I ran them all on Conrail
