South African runor

Post by renrut44 »

There is a rumor circulating among Transnet staff that the 232 narrow gauge 4400HP AC/AC locos they have on order from CNR Dalian will have 16-710 engines

Does anyone know if there is any basis to this rumor?

It has some logic as Dalian hold the EMD license for China

Does the above artists impression hold any clues?

They could also be sourcing the engines directly from EMD.
IINM, the license Dalian holds allows production of the 265-16 engine, not the 710...

Unfortunately not EMD, a MTU 20V4000 @ 1800 rpm

At a press conference late last October the head of Transnet Engineering denied any knowledge of what engine was proposed

Said that the mechanical/electrical design had been outsourced to ABB, and it was their prerogative to specify the prime mover

Very convenient for a Parastatal apparatchik, when the type turns out to be a dog, blame those whitefellas in Europe

Transnet are paying at least a US$200k premium per unit for the Chinese locos, when compared with the GEVO powered GEs purchased at the same time, There is a very smelly dead rat in Transnet's cupboard

At least in Sweden: MTU = Multiple Trouble Unit

Return to “EMD - Electro-Motive”
