CP upgraded the wheel slip system in some SD40-2 units from the standard WS10 card. The units had units attached to each axle. They look like the modern speed recorder units. Someone may correct me, but they make some pulse or frequency, which the unit can compute as speed.

How was it designed to work? I have been in slippery conditions where it got confused. This made the unit drop its load.

Was the system just out of adjustment, or was it just too sensitive?

I believe the locomotives were equipped with QES-1000 cards (Quantum Electronic Systems), now owned by Wabtec. Current system is the QES-III system. They used axle generators for axle rpms. They probably aren't being maintained.
