At that time, all railroads certainly weren't created equal in regards to its policy on whether facial hair was allowed among its employees, especially those in engine service. Some allowed it, others totally forbade it, and then there were those that allowed it only up to a certain length. But without knowing what SP's actual policy was, you might want to err on the safe side, and keep your appropriate characters clean-shaven...
