TRAINS TO MOVE FASTER BETWEEN RALEIGH, CARY
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The N.C. Department of Transportation recently completed a $7 million train-signal and track project between downtown Raleigh and downtown Cary, the News Observer reported.

The improvements will enhance freight and passenger rail efficiency and improve service reliability, according to a news release from the transportation department.

New bi-directional signals were installed, which will increase the railroad's capacity and flexibility by allowing trains to move more efficiently in each direction on each track. The upgraded track work also allows passenger train speeds to increase from 60 mph to 79 mph.

Other future planned improvements along the Raleigh to Cary corridor include the junction at Cary, the bridge over East Durham Road and sections of track work along the corridor.

(The preceding appeared in the News Observer on February 12, 2008.)

This is actually quite an interesting little line- as between Raleigh and Cary, the CSX and NS run beside each other for 10 miles. CSX owns and maintains one track and NS (Actually the NCRR) owns and maintains the other, but they ae operated as a single double track installation, with crossovers at each end. There have been times in the past when the maintenance levels on each track was obviously different, though in the past 2 years both roads have done heavy upgrades, with some NCDOT assistance. Dispatch for both tracks is by CSX. The line cuts through the center of the NC State University campus, and an increase in track speed to 79 is in the works.
