What was involved when they became SD-9(m)s? What does the M mean?

Just heard the bad news and thought I'd post it here, NS has retired its SD9 fleet within the past few days. They've been drained and taken to Conway for disposition.

Does that include the two at Camden, NJ's Pavonia engine house ?

Sounds like its the whole fleet, though at least one has been seen in operation last weekend.

Also sounds like a chance that one or two will be saved for preservation. Supposedly, NS in the past has promised one to the museum in Bellevue, Ohio. Also, at least one individual is trying to get #59 (An ex Central of Georgia unit) saved for TVRM.

There's conflicting information on those two. Some online sources are say the power department wants them gone, while the corporate suits want the pair retained because of the RCO equipment that was recently installed.

I have always read that SD9's were good units. I was
surprised recently to see a photo of a NS SD9 at Pavonia Yard.
With the exception of the BNSF, I figured that none of the class 1's
had any SD9's or any 1st. generation power for that matter on the
rosters (business unit excepted.)

Norfolk Southern 52 & 57 are the only two SD9Ms on the active roster.

I remember about..oh, must be about 8-10 years now, when NS used to use one of those SD's on the xNKP up here for switching in Hammond, IN I remember the 50 series numbers on them. I wish I was taking photos back then..

Still lookin good. Saw one last year on the Shared line with AMTK. They sound excellent. Have they had horn replacements recently?

To answer some of the questions/rumors about the SD9's, this is the info I have gathered from actual employees:

All the NS SD9/SD9M's have been retired.

#52 & 57 are NOT considered SD9's after being converted into remote controlled units. They will remain on the roster and hopefully in Pavonia Yard for at least a little while longer.

This information was gathered Wednesday, the day after the announcement.

What shape are these in? If they have a later 567 and are in good shape, I'd be surprised if a shortline, elevator, or lessor didn't pick them up. Or GTI/Pan Am, they're good at picking up junk.

An update. These units are being gathered and stored at Conway, PA. However, so far units 58 and 59 have remained in active service working the yard in Bellevue, Ohio.

Eddie Durnwald forwarded me photos of both units that he managed to catch at Bellevue this past Thursday. I have uploaded the photos of them to my website:

There is also some confusion on whether units 52 and 57 will be retired. These units were converted to remote control platforms last year and have been assigned to the Pavonia Yard at Camden, NJ since the conversion. So far, both units are still at Pavonia Yard.

I haven't seen 52 at Pavonia since October. 57 was still there on Jan 13, but I haven't seen it working.
