A question about Norfolk Southern's SD40-2 fleet.
In viewing the excellent NSDash9.com http://www.nsdash9.com/roster.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; website NS has apx 500 SD40-2 in its fleet. I was wondering what does NS use all these units for. I know NS is a very large railroad and the obvious answer is to move freight, but with all the newer units (SD60, SD70, SD75, SD80, SD90, Dash8-40, Dash9-44, ES44AC) along with the GP and MP units they also have, what role do these seemingly ageless units preform?

The few that I have seen here in NJ, I've seen them on Conrail locals (OI16), a CSX Ethanol train (K408), on an NS Manifest (33K), and even one up in Selkirk Yard a few days ago in New York. I have only seen 7 of these units though

NS doesn't view these engines as reliable road power so they are basically for yard and local work mostly, now when they need to they will put them on road trains but they try to stay away from that

They're mostly used on locals where using GP units isn't enough power..

The Cresson helper pool used to the haunt of SD40-2's, but I guess now it is mostly SD40E's.
