Well, what you typed said it all...

January of 1966? I thought the -35 line had been done away with by then, replaced by the -38 line. Unless it (and the other CofG SD35's ordered) were held over locomotives. If so, I would assume they have 645's instead of 567's.

I may be right, someone correct me if not.

Production of the 35 line ended in January 1966, so NS 2993 would have been among the last built. The "1966" line really went into production in 1965 with the SD45 in Febuary and prototype SD40x and GP40x units being built later in November of the same year. 1966 saw production of the 40's start, with the 38's following in 1967 and 39's in 1968.

Both Southern and Central of Georgia received SD35s built in January 1966, they were the very last of that model.

First SD45 #4351 was built in December 1965, not February. First SD40X #434 was built in July 1964, four more SD40Xs #434A-D were built in February 1965 and the final four SD40Xs #434E-H were built in April 1965. The GP40X #433, was built in May 1965. First SD40s were built in January 1966, First GP40s in November 1965. First GP38s were built in January 1966. First SW1500 was EMD #107 in June 1966. First Production SD45 in May 1966 was the Great Northern's #400 Hustle Muscle. First SD38 was B&LE #861 in May 1967. First SD39 was SP #5300 in August 1968. Diesel data from A J Kristopans EMD Serial Number Page.

SSW9389, you said a GP40X was built in May 1965. The GP40Xs were not built until the late 1970s.

EMD's first GP40 #433A is sometimes refered to as a GP40X. It was the first EMD 3000 horsepower geep. It was built concurently with the SD40X, no one has a problem with that X reference. The GP40Xs you are refering to are the 23 built in late 1977 and into 1978. A better model designation would have been GP40-2X, but that was not used by EMD. The one thing that 433A and the other 23 GP40Xs have in common is flared radiators. Call 433A what you like, it was the first GP40, unlike any other, and most definitely eXperimental.
