The "very long" 686 is probably one of the longest passenger trains (revenue cars or not) running over those tracks in many many decades ... Very nice catch.

Seen it before when 685 bonked near Haverhill and 687 came up behind and pushed it home to Portland. Made for an interesting series of station stops.

Historic photo of Portsmouth-Manchester mixed freight in 1965 posted yesterday.
Regular passenger service ended in 1954, Mixed train service ended in 1965,
Freight service between Manchester and Raymond ended in 1981 and ended
between Raymond and Rockingham in 1982. In the late 1970's, the Manchester-
Portsmouth line saw numerous hi-wide loads of material for the Piscataqua
River Bridge and the Seabrook Power plant, as there were clearance issues
in the Haverhill MA area. These trains mostly crawled at 5 MPH from Manchester
to Rockingham, as the track was really not in shape to handle these heavy loads.

Anyone on this list that may have ridden that mixed train? A first hand account
of the trip would sure be interesting.

I'm assuming in 1965 when this photo was taken the eastern was still operational between Portsmouth and Boston? If so, there probably wasn't passenger service for much longer. When did passenger service north of Newburyport end?

Ronald Dale Karr's 1995 The Rail Lines of Southern New England states on p.259 that Eastern Route passenger service was cut back to Newburyport on January 4, 1965 when the B&M stopped interstate service. The Newburyport draw was taken out of service later, date unspecified in the book.

Took this photo at 43.069225, -70773798. Does anyone know the last time trains used this spur and what it was used for?

Also, on another note. DO-1 got held up at MP4-5 just off of Great Bay Road on Tuesday due to a tree across the line. It continued up to Rockingham a little while later but didn't make it to Dover as planned. It departed the following morning.

This photo of 506 parked next to the Portsmouth parking garage on April 10th
probably indicates the crew has either outlawed or is in the yard office in the
garage. Thanks to Dan Comick for the photo.

Has anyone been inside the garage to see where the yard office might be? Thanks.

The Railroad office is in the bottom corner at the west end of the garage next to the tracks.

There was a whopping 21 cars parked with 516e at Rockingham yesterday. DO-1 reorganized and took 8 loads up to Portsmouth/Newington and left the rest on the siding or woods track at Rockingham I believe.

Here is a video of the long train plus DO-1 crossing the trestle... Also I throw 682 in for good measure.

Enjoy.

5966 crossed the Sarah Mildred Long bridge today with a DODX flat car at around 12:20pm. It dropped the car on the siding near Pine Street in Kittery and returned back over the river at around 1:10pm

Other than track equipment I believe this is the first engine to cross the bridge?

Unfortunately I can't view the photo at this link, but you posted the link in May 2018 and this was reportedly the first locomotive to cross the bridge:
