But Nine Dragons put all the mill switching contracts out for bid across the US. Watco won the bids, they are also taking over switching operations at NDP's facility in Wisconsin with the newly established Wisconsin Rapids Railroad. They just received a former UP GP15 to switch that mill. Pan Am could have kept control of the contracts through a monopoly on yard space. Whoever controls the yard controls the switching operations at the Rumford facility, just because without the yard the mill is logistically impossible to switch. Same can be said of Old Town. Pan Am gave up that power when they sold the yard in Rumford to the mill. They are also reinstalling the 1 1/2 track in Old Town which will allow the mill and yard there to be isolated from the main line, allowing Watco to switch that facility.

I have no idea what the operational entity in Maine will be called or what the motive power situation will look like. No WATCO/lease power has showed up to date, so it seems likely ST power will remain at Rumford for a bit. However, part of a discussion on WRR on Loconotes indicated that a handful of GP15's had been procured, so it is possible we will see some black and yellow engines show up in time.

Those Maine mills are quite a ways from the balance of Watcos' operations. Where will the locos be serviced? Obviously they can be fueled via truck but what about sanding, light and heavy repairs, etc... Agreement with Pan Am for heavy repairs?

Should be interesting to see how they handle it. Could be quite the shuffle going on. Who knows ... maybe the answer is reopen the roundhouse.

Hearing now that WATCO has been training a crew for Old Town in the same class as the Rumford crews. So they may be taking over operations there sooner than the new year.

Believe Old Town will be next week as well. They had the class in Old Town today going over the blue 500 that was up there when I drove by.

According to a WATCO exec., Rumford switching began Sunday 9/1, and will be 16/7 going forward. They have been working Old Town for over a week already, 8/7. Don't know what they are doing for power. Anybody have a chance to get some pics?

Can't imagine that would be the case in Rumford. There are major public crossings.

That does not mean anything, ad there are many trackmobile operations that cross major roads all over. The guys at Specialty Minerals that I knew when I worked for Guilford were NORAC/FRA qualified as they connected with us. The issue with a trackmobile is they are typically operated with far less tonnage and trackage than what would be needed at Rumford.

WATCO has plenty of options, depending on what their requirements are and how much they want to spend.

It could be one of these:

...or one of these:

...or one of these:

...or one of these:

...or maybe they'll just lease a GP40 from PAR.
