Hi Bob, lots of things that you can see while in New England. Around 30 RR miles west of Deerfield is Hoosac Tunnel, that's an interesting place. Sure you've heard of it! You can see lots of trains around Deerfield, as you have lines from all directions converging. To the east, there's stretches of main through Erving-Wendell-Orange-Athol, etc., that provide great photo spots, with some long, sweeping curves right on a main road.

If you want to go that far east, there's Gardner, where you can usually find a through freight hanging out. As always, grab your scanner. If you look at the NERAIL Photo Archive, at http://naphotos.nerail.org you can see very many photos from that area. (MP 383--345).

Good luck Railfanning!!!

Going west of Springfiels on the CSX fromer Boston and Albany is good too. There are many spots to see this heavy grade line's action. Take route 20 west, then 8 north to follow the line.

Take route 20 west, then 8 north to follow the line. :D Northeast of the jct of rte. 20 & 8, there is a village called Bancroft. That is a really good location. Take 20 west from Chester. A road called Wade Inn Rd forks off. Take that to Bancroft road. Wade Inn alos continues onto rte. 8.
