Am curious if there was any thought back when Guilford owned the D&H of running CR/BM interchange traffic up the Port of Albany branch through Kenwood yard and up to Mechanicville vs running via Rotterdam Jct? It would save quite a few miles and if they could have built a small connector track taking you from the Albany Branch to an Eastward direction on the Fitchburg it would have eliminated the backing maneuver and need to change ends as is currently the practice at Rotterdam Jct?

I think they did this for a short time. Guilford: 5 Years of Change featured a picture of such a train I think. The D&H bankruptcy would have ended the move. Reinstalling the wye at Mechanicville would be a major project as it would bisect a four way intersection and come very close to some houses.

Putting the east wye back in at XO is a non-starter.

The reverse move at RJ is not bad because their power is already west out and can depart without a run around like when the train comes direct from the West.

Not sure how they are currently doing it, CSX always went back and forth between bringing the train from Selkirk or Buffalo.
