Hi Folks,

From what I understand, Conrail operated the Ann Arbor RR in Ohio and Michigan from April 1, 1976 until April 1977 when the Michigan Interstate Railway (d/b/a Ann Arbor Railway System) took over. Does anyone remember CR's operation of the Ann Arbor? Did the AA's power (GP-35s and RS-1s) get mixed into Conrail's power pool that first year. Were any repainted from orange (or Wabash-inspired blue and white as in the case of the Alcos) into CR colors? Also, were any Conrail diesels used on the AA's through run between Toledo, OH and Elberta, MI. Just wondering if anyone has any memories of CR's operation of the AA.

From what I know of all the Ann Arbor Locomotives were patched out and renumbered all remained on the AA Rostor and all went to the Michigan State Railways. If I rember I'll get the rostor of the former numbers and the Conrail numbers that they got.

As far as I know, Conrail did have road numbers assigned to Ann Arbor's fleet but none of the locomotives were actually renumbered since the state of Michigan purchased the Ann Arbor before or just after the formation of Conrail with Conrail being the designated operator untill Michigan Interstate took over. I am not 100% sure, but I believe Ann Arbor's power pretty much stayed on home rails during Conrail's operation of the line.

Outher info on these locos as follows:

Ten Former Ann Arbor GP35s were assigned Conrail road numbers but never actually joined the roster. They went instead to the State of Michigan, eventually going to work for the Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railway. Built with trucks from trade-in ALCO FA units, these GP35s would have occupied the Conrail number series of 3610-3619. While several of the units were painted into TSBY colors.
