Back when I started in '79, Conrail looked hopeless. Granted, some of the groundwork had been laid before his tenure, but Mr. Crane gave the impression that the company had been turned around as if he were turning an engine on a turntable.

A few years after he retired, Mr. Crane rode one of my trains from New Haven down to Penn Station.
Didn't even ride in the fancy car, just coach.
He was thrifty to a fault!
