I don't know much about GM&O at all - what kind of shape were IC and GM&O in prior to the merger, was there anything special about the merger, and why was predominantly GM&O spun off in the 1980's when it seems like GM&O hit more important cities on its way from CHI to NOLA. I don't have a super-specific topic, but I'm looking to understand more about the merger and divestiture.
My only two impressions of GM&O are of uber-clean red SD40's on coal trains near Joliet, and filthy F3's on the "plug". I dare say the plug was the most improved train on the Metra system when comparing 1969 to 2007. I rode the modern plug once for kicks, and it was a rocketship.
