CN Railway Says 2,800 Employees Strike After Deadline (Update1)

By Rob Delaney

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Canadian National Railway Co., the country's largest railroad, said its conductors went on strike after a midnight deadline on contract talks passed without agreement on a new pact.

Managers will replace 2,800 conductors and yard workers represented by the United Transportation Union to keep Canadian National's freight operations running, the Montreal-based company said today in a statement distributed by CCNMatthews. Commuter rail services in Toronto and Montreal won't be affected by the strike, it said.

They are only on strike in Canada. Amtrak shouldn't be affected but those of us who run trains south from canada are going to feel it...

The terms of the new proposed agreement have been released:
  • one year term
  • 3% increase in wages
  • a signing bonus (for more than the increase)
There was nothing about changes to any benefits. The UTU has asked their members to return to work pending ratification.

What a joke that was. I watched the whole thing on the CPAC channel. No opposition from the offical opposition. Why? Who knows, but it probably has to do with the fact they let CN safety deterioate. The NDP really went to bat for the CN worker. I hope they remember that next election time.
