I work for the UP out of Proviso as an engineer... Rumor over here is that the CN is the highest paying railroad around. I live in the south suburbs so I was just curious as to what is in Homewood. Is that facility just a diesel shop or is it also a beginning/end terminal for road runs? Also, how often do they hire there. Just curious, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Homewood is basically the center of the universe for CN. major backshop, Ivory tower where all the big thinkers congregate, similar to Omaha on the UP (without the shops), arrogance to spare. I can't remember what the new contract wages are but the old one was $33/hr, 10 hour basic day, very little if any arbs and work rules. Morale is about as low as on any other Class 1.

Are the US offices for CNIC in homewood as well? I figured most of the brass moved to Montreal after the merger, but I have no idea really. Also, where was the IC headquarters after Central station bit the dust?

If you take a drive past markham yard, you'll find a huge classification yard that trains from Canada (east), Wisconsin and Canada (west), Iowa, and New Orleans are sorted at. If you read some of the back issues of JD Santucci's "Hot Times" column on the rr.net homepage, he worked for them (maybe still does) from Markham.

It's like telling your dog he's going to the vet to get neutered, or that fateful "one way" trip. Wouldn't you be nervous?
