While trainwatching earlier this week, I heard the BNSF dispatcher tell a manifest in the siding that he was being held for a Silver Z train. Does anyone know what exactly this is? Does BNSF have different levels of Z train service now?

The ever elusive "Silver" or "Highlighted" Z-train is nothing more than a behind schedule Z-train. When a z-train (or any train) gets far enough behind schedule or the crew is running out of time to legally operate it, it will become "highlighted" (just so happens to be a silver highlight) in the computer, making it the highest priority train on the railroad. Everything gets out of the way for a Silver Z.

Thanks. I wonder who would have gotten priority, the Silver Z or Union Pacific's Super Z which came through 10 minutes later!

UP's Super Z - I hope UP's latest "meltdown" results in UPS getting what they paid (not) for with that train LOL...
