I read that BNSF traded some SW1000's and SW1500's to a leasing company for some GP38-2 and GP40-2 models.

Any reason why they would swap yard engines for road switchers?

The SW1000 & SW 1500 are older & kaput at 1,000 & 1500 hp
The GP 38 provides 2000 HP The GP40 provides 3000 hp with a turbo
The GP40's may be deturboed to make them GP38 & keep on

EMD made a lot of GP38/40. Price may be right!

BNSF really likes GP38s and GP40s since they have been acquiring so many and upgrading older locomotives such as GP30s and GP35s to similar specifications. It makes a lot of sense to have a standardized road switcher fleet and flexible locomotives that are suited to yard service and local service.

More likely the only way to get real 4 axle locos. If they did not do this they would have to get gensets. 38 and 40 are better than gensets.

The only possible exception will be is the ECO rebuild is successful.

It has been way to long since anyone made 4-axles.

California got stuck with GP60M's for switchers, they are by far the worse engines I ever switched with!!!
I want the GP38's back!
