Renumbered locomotives in general. (NOT SD9s)

According to the January 2007 TRAINS the following locomotives are being renumbered. C44-9Ws 5841-5843 will become 5530-5532.
SD39s 6200-6219 are going to numbers 1910-1929.
SD38Ps 6260-6270 will be renumbered as 1800-1810.
Their slugs will be renumbered to 1811-1821 from 6289-6299.
Eight, six axle B-units will be renumbered from 7500-7509 to 1900-1907.
SD40-2s 7300-7339 will receive numbers originally held by SDF40-2s. Numbers 6960-6977 and previously unused numbers of 6978-6999.

I like how the patch jobs are in blu/ylw rather than org/blk, making it seem like ATSF is still the owner of the locomotive.

What is the purpose of renumbering locomotives. We already renumbered two slugs at the shop.

It is easier if locomotives of a similar type are numbered close together. New locomotives are being purchased and for some reason or another BNSF wishes to use the SD9's former numbers.
