Well, here is a sensible question! WOOHOO!

Ahem, the new ES44s, whether it be AC or DC, all look the same. It is cheaper for GE to just use the same parts on the DC model than to move the air conditioner back over there. This way, AC44 and ES44AC,DC air conditioners can be swapped out, and railroad maintenance only have to learn the layout of the new locomotives once. The NS ES40DCs also have the large box on the left side.

Now, what the space is used for, I don't know, because obviously the DC units don't need inverters. Ask a GE employee or BNSF maintenence person to answer that question! :-D
