Hot off the presses yesterday is Amtrak’s FY2021 grant request. It’s interesting reading and gives us a preview of what could be coming over the next couple years and somewhat of a preview of what Amtrak is going to propose for reauthorization. The biggest piece is Amtrak’s request for a new grant (at $300 million) for a new corridor development program. The program as requested Currently assumes that the status quo remains into the next reauth as far as the major provisions of the FAST act such as the 750 mile rule and thus is being requested separately from the long distance and current state supported funding. They have some interesting ideas to try to encourage states to pursue some of these corridors such as starting off with a couple of years of initial operation with no state contribution and gradually phasing in the state contribution as the service is established.
