When 406 was restored for the 2011 exhibit train, it allegedly received a skid-mounted HEP generator of the type used in the F59PHIs. This was supposed to allow 822 to be turned off while the exhibit train was on display while maintaining HEP, but every time I visited the exhibit train (in 2011, 2012, and 2015) whichever Genesis was attached was providing HEP, with 406 sitting cold. I then later saw 406 in service as an NPCU on the Downeaster several times, and again it sounded silent. Has Amtrak ever actually used 406 for generating HEP, and now with the F59s gone do they even have that type of generator anymore?
