Okay, that does make some sense (Amtrak probably is already maxed out, and the AEM-7's can't power anything anymore per edict). My main point is "gee, aren't they supposed to be in the shops tempermamently?"

Got to see some of the extras today myself, both 384 and 385 for Amtrak's Carl Sandburg. Man it would be nice, having seen the crowd coming off 385, if we could have those permanently. I know slots may not be open with BNSF to do so, but man it would be nice to have some extra options.

384 departing Macomb, IL station, which had about 30-40 people get on.

385 departing Macomb, IL, which had practically 100 get off, if not more.

To give an idea, this is what the crowd coming off 385 looked like:

Only 4 got on board 385 to go to Quincy.

Here were the two of the runs with borrowed equipment at Jersey Avenue (Link should skip directly to point in the video):
Train 1054, Washington DC to New York Penn with MARC equipment: https://youtu.be/U0ctU-1wR2g?t=17s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Train 1099, New York Penn to Washington DC with NJT Arrow IIIs: https://youtu.be/U0ctU-1wR2g?t=3m38s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Your bottom picture probably doesn't do justice to the numbers at Macomb; but it doesn't take Thanksgiving to draw a big crowd at Macomb.

Is a second engine barely visible in the first picture? Perhaps the tighter turn around doesn't leave time to wye the train in West Quincy.

-Correction on my previous post...
Holiday Extra #1054 had MARC HHP-8 #4911
Holiday Extra #1056 actually had Amtrak City Sprinter #608 (per pictures seen online). Same consist as #1054

What was the biggest regional consist to run over the NEC?
Have any of the CRESCENTS been running with an extra sleeper in addition to an extra coach?
What extra cars have been running on the CARDINAL?

All of them have had second engines recently, even the normal ones such as 383.

As for Macomb, that shot was taken after most had detrained. That line of people waiting for the train to leave to reach the bus station stretched around the train and down to the crossing. I try to be courteous on photography of people and not do so, except from a distance.

But yes, I know Macomb can be crazy, especially waiting for 380 in the early morning.

Mr. Moss, all I can hope is that the IZ you photographed yesterday IS double ended, lest WIU be minus a few students (maybe even some from one of your classes).

The double ending with P-42's is practice for a turn both at Quincy and CUS with the additional Holiday trains. As "Dr. Goebbels", aka Mark Maglieri, noted on NBC News last night, Amtrak had to accelerate the required inspections and other maintenance for these in station turns.
