It sounds like the antenna is almost a 1/2 wave in length. I agree with clearblock: Keep the antenna as it is. The longer length could help "pull in" weaker signals.

After enduring a trip last year with antenna failure I decided to purchase my own magnetic version. A co-worker that's quite the radio guru ordered a mag mount for me that I carry in my grip. The company web site is listed below.

Instructions are included for cutting to the proper length.
