I sat down and finally poured $100 into buying a new scanner for railfanning/planespotting/etc. I went to Radioshack and got the Pro-404 200-channel handheld scanner. I already have the local airport (KHTS and KDWU) programmed in along with CSX, NS, and the fire/police station in the booklet. Since it only runs on 4 AA batteries or a 9V plug, I'm good to go. And only for $100. Great scanner for starting out with, loud and clear, plus it has a headphone jack for recording/headphones.
