Hi All,

Just caught an episode of Tracks Ahead, which featured Doyle McCormick of Southern Pacific's # 4449 Northern fame. Apparently this enthusiast has rescued a PA-2, in pieces, and is in the process of restoring it to the first cab ride he ever got, # 190 NKP PA-2. From the photos, he has a ways to go, but he has obviously spent his kids inheritance restoring it.

Anyone know how that engine is doing today? From what we saw, he probably would love to run it with the 4449, or by itself, hauling passenger cars. I believe he is keeping it on his own property and working on it when he and his buddies have the time, and money. This engine probably has the best chance of riding the high Iron once again.

Nice to see a really passionate Railfan.

The locomotives Doyle McCormick rescued are PA-1s. There are no PA-2s in North America. The only existing PA-2s are in South America from the Paulista Railroad.

Hi,

Depends upon how he is having # 190 restored. His option either way. Additionally, a third option; the one taken by Union Pacific with its E-9's. These engines have only the outside shells of the E-9's remaining. Internally they are GP-38's. The idea was to modernize the engines so that today's enginemen would feel comfortable driving them. Sitting at the controls of E-9 # 951, UP, is exactly like sitting at the controls of a GP-38. If you can drive a GP-38, you can drive the UP E-9's.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't Doyle rebuilding the PA as a PA-4, as they were "reshopped" by MK in '74? So, Doyle is doing something similar to the UP (although, most of the credit has to go to MK on that one)... kinda. It definately isn't going to be as it was when it rolled out of the factory...

Doyles Locomotive will have several changes, cab updated to 26RL brake. No 244 engine but newer and better MLW 251 engine.
The second engine will be done by Doyle as a cosmetic only for the Smithsonian institution, it will be done as Santa Fe.

Internaly she is an M420 with an 251C-12, Alternator. and Solid state cabinet.

Since the M420 is the MLW version of GP38-2, you could say this is the UP type aproach

Hi All,

As expected, Doyle is being practical. He will have an engine that will remind him of his childhood ride in # 190, and the advantage of having an internal modern engine with its implied reliability and compatibility with a modern diesel, and could therefore be driven by anyone qualified to drive a modern diesel. Replacement of parts etc. will be no problem. So, when can we expect to see this engine at the point of an excursion train or whatever ?

Interestingly enough, things appear to gotten rather quiet with Doyle's first love, # 4449 Daylight Northern. How is that engine doing ?

Perfectly fine. She survived her derailment without any major damage and is in working order. Has some local appearances scheduled in summer, but no major excursions at last report.

Hi,

Hadn't heard about a derailment, what was that about ? Also I did hear that she was NOT in Daylight colors any longer.

She had a minor derailment when a rail rolled under her last year, while doubleheading with SP&S 700. 700 received minor damage to the pony truck, '49 survived without major damage.

'49 is in Daylight. She was repainted over the summer of 2005 from AFT RW&B.
