For the past few years, civic boosters in Danville, Pennsylvania have hosted a street festival, based upon the community's iron- (not steel-) making heritage. Since early rails played an important part, the North Shore Railroad, one of the Robey short lines, has co-operated by running excursion trains between Northumberland and Bloomsburg.

Yesterday morning, a 21-year-old transient, who appears to have recently discharged from a mental facility, spoiled things by throwing himself under the wheels of the first run of the day, appearing to have decapitated himself in the process. I can only imagine the reaction of security-obsessed parents who brought their younger offspring with visions of Thomas the Tank Engine, or whatever.
Those of us who have taken a serious interest interest in the industry since adolescence are likely to be caught up in the usual exercise of finger-pointing and scapegoat-seeking. The incident serves as painful proof that the shrinkage of that portion of the public that understands both the potential and the dangers of very heavy industry, and the growth of its unrealistic, over-sensitized, over-litigious counterpart, is a strong contributing factor to incidents such as this.
