Illinois Railway Museum Public Transit Access

I'm thinking of visiting the Illinois Railway Museum. I'll take the Lake Shore to Chicago but the museum website offers no guidance on how to use public transit to get to the museum. Suggestions?
I'd prefer not to rent a car.

The closest you can get is Crystal Lake on the METRA. No idea if there's taxi service there. You may wish to reconsider that car rental decision.

That's what I thought. Just another symptom of our autocentric society. Bring back the interurbans!
