Yeah, that's right. I earned it as I pay into it... and I had/have no choice in the matter. And everyone else who paid into it and are vested should get theirs, as well. Oh, and by wanting to remain separate from what I imagine you are thinking as a sinking ship (that being Social Security), aren't you saying the same thing to your non-railroad brothers?

"Are out of your mind? Have you done your homework? RR retirement system should be an example of efficiency for the rest of the country. We are completely self-sufficient!"

So would you support the creation of a federally administered Hairdresser's Retirement Board, Truck Drivers Retirement Board, Professional Athelete's Retirement Board, etc, etc.? If yes, why would you advocate a separate supplemental security program for every flippin' industry. If no, why are railroads different? Just because it's always been that way?

You sound like you should have gone into politics instead of railroading. You would have done a good job screwing a good thing up. Why is there a need for a successor plan when this plan isn't flawed. The key to fixing social security isn't ruining RRB.
The thing the politicians CAN'T STAND about RRB is they can't get their grubby paws and sticky fingers on it. They f-ed up Socialistic IN-security. Why, in THEIR minds, shouldn't they be able to borrow and pilfer our Railroad Retirement, and politicize it, too? It is NOT suffering from the same malaise their screwed up mess in SSI is, SO-LEAVE-RRB-ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to know where the politicians come up with "those making up to, but less than $250,000 per year" as middle class. Really? Anyone on this forum (that works in the railroad industry in TY&E service) enjoying that kind of income?

Mitt will loose the vote from Senior Citizens , cause they are not gone have Paul Ryan flush their benefits down the drain , also Paul Ryan has not been master of on time budgets. and he losses the Railroad vote. Cause we are not gone make them touch Railroad retirement, thanks G.O.P for nominating a team that is now known as re-election team to elect Obama ;-)

Mitt's decision made it easier for me to vote for Obama/Biden. Till them it was a toss up between the democrats and the libertarian party. Ryan's proposed budget wanted to screw with railroad retirement & medicare. About the only thing I almost agree on in Ryan's budget was cutting corporate taxes down to 20% but they would of had to gut the deductions which even at the present tax rate of 35% most corporations pay very little taxes example: GE only paid 3% tax last year. Ryan didn't stop with just corporations he included the wealthy on those tax breaks. It just became another republican proposal to protect those with the most.

Paul Ryan is nothing but a HYPOCRITE. It is well documented that one of his idols/inspirations is Ayn Rand and her Objectivism Movement. He used to give away copies of her book "Atlas Shrugged" (a book about big government taxing/overregulating its most productive workers and their resulting strike) to his interns/co-workers for Christmas. Now recently Ryan has been heard to denounce Rand and Objectivism because it discourages religion. He basically turned his back on a set of beliefs he has repeatedly claimed were major sources of his current mindset- so he could cater to the religious demographic of voters. All about getting the votes. And we all know he probably still believes in everything he claims he doesnt now- people dont change generally, they just LIE so they can get elected. And funny thing is, his "attack" on RR benefits violates many beliefs of Objectivism, one of his self-identified inspirations. This guy is as crooked as they come- a person who willingly sells out their beliefs for the sake of votes! And he most assuredly will sell out YOUR benefits if he thinks it can garner him more votes with a wider demographic than just railroaders!

There is no such thing as Civil Service when it comes to Politicians- just Civil Selfishness and the sense of Power that they are addicted to like a drug.....

We really need a "like" button! Very well said, agree on all accounts.

Cowford wrote:What they really need to do is sunset RRB altogether. It makes no sense to maintain a separate goverment-sponsored retirement system for one specific industry (particularly one that has a small employee base). And if it does make sense to keep it, shouldn't we have a separate system for EVERY industry and employment market segment?

And I said "sunset": I am not suggesting RRB should be eliminated (like FELA should)... those that have paid in/are vested (like me!) would remain covered.
I really hope this is a joke. we railroaders should get that better retirement, we pay more and also deal with RR life its not easy.
