George,
No ... various iterations of Pan Am boxcars have been moving west on SLR for as long as I have lived in the area. As I said, never a lot of them and not on every train (not every train has interchange from ST), but fairly consistently ... mostly going to CN locations in Wisconsin and Illinois.
Best,
Fritz

I was interested in CN9634's comment about "vented C plate cars" ... what are vented boxcars?
Fritz, boxcars built or modified specifically for pulp service (given pulp can create a humid environment as it has a high moisture content and may be loaded warm) feature pretty obvious venting (roof vents or exterior wall vents ... perhaps that is what CN9634 is talking about? A Google of "pulp boxcars" will bring up a few examples. New boxcars are generally equipped with limited venting, with vent holes in the interior walls. You can't see them from the outside as they open into the backside of the exterior vertical supports.

Hello,
This morning today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0819 with the following:

GP40-3 3805
GP40-2 3047
QG GP40 3105
5 flat cars
6 tank cars
30 propane cars
3 covered hoppers
29 hi-cube boxcars
2 boxcars

That's 75 cars total, including 10 loads and 65 empties. Only three locomotives for this 75-car train.

Because of the interest in the boxcars, here's a breakdown:
9 hi-cubes were loaded (2 AOK and 7 FBOX)
20 hi-cubes were empty (mostly FBOX and various CN reporting marks)
2 boxcars were empty

Cowford, thanks for the explanation about vented boxcars. Are any of the hi-cubes vented? Or only the regular boxes?

Have a good day,
Fritz

That's quite surprising. I was under the impression that Pan Am kept their boxcar fleet in captive service on their system and used RBOX (or similar) for interchange service.
Why would you think that? Pan Am has always used their own cars for interchange, along with various lease fleet cars.

They definitely go all over the place. Here's a Guilford Grey box in Florida:

A Harvest Gold box in Wisconsin:

A white Guilford in Indiana:

B&M Blue in Ohio:

A Pan Am in Ontario, Canada:

A partially-globed dark blue Pan Am, also in Ontario:

A dark blue Pan Am that quickly faded to teal, in Wisconsin:

I had seen discussion of such in the Pan Am.Clipper and heard an Executive speak about some aspects of this in person. It never made complete sense to me but that was the story. Transload at Ayer which as I understand it was just been expanded.

There is a pool of cars in the 'paper shuttle' moves to Ayer, but its an allocation of the entire fleet, not the entire fleet itself. Pan Am's boxcar fleet from legacy companies is quite large, so no shortage of boxes to send all over the country (and they do).

Hello,
Today's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond in flurries at 0938 with the following:

GP40-2 3035
QG SD40U 6904
GP40 3004
GP40-2 3008
GP40-2 3007
1 centerbeam flat
10 cement hoppers
24 tank cars
29 propane cars
16 hi-cube boxcars

That's 80 cars total, all empties! All 16 hi-cubes were also empties (included CN family, NDYX, COER, and one BNSF). No Pan Am boxcars today, although 24 cars interchanged from them.
Have a good day,
Fritz

I've only seen 50' Plate C pulp boxcars... not sure about ownership or how many there are altogether.

The CP 60'HC single plug door (note they have double door cars) cars I believe were intended for paper & pulp service and they have vents on the roofs. Most of them are sidelined as of now, but I also given the load pattern and density of the bales you weigh out before you cube out a 60'HC so it isn't necessary. A bunch of these cars are in storage but some route SLR-CMQ-CP for Domtar.

Where do they store cars these days? I went up to Stratford last week, and it looked like even the northern section of NHCR is clear, even those boxes furthest north that had been sitting forever.

Now that is an interesting report. Thank you for sharing.
