CNJ or LVRR making deliveries in Jersey City.

As a little kid I remember watching trains making local deliveries to businesses on Rt 440 in Jersey City. I don't recall if it was CNJ or LVRR but I recall it was usually a single diesel dropping off a few boxcars or tank cars. This would have been in the early 60's. I'm interested in finding out about this service. I believe some of the track might still be visible in a few places. Can anyone provide further information about this local service?

The track along Rt. 440 was the LVRR, but the CNJ did come in from West Side Ave (N&NY) and effect and connection with the LVRR near the EOT by Ryerson Steel (LVRR's biggest customer on the branch). The LVRR branch was built alongside the ROW of the Morris Canal.

Thanks for the information, CF. It helps a lot. I had a feeling it as the LVRR and that Ryerson was one of their customers. I already had access to the 1928 Plabook which, for it's time, is an increbible source of information of Jersey City. I've also been looking for pictures of car being dleivered in that area, but so far no luck. I think I'm going to pay a visit to the Jersey City Main Library and see what they have on file.

The LV track ended a hundred or so feet south of Clendenny Avenue, at what I believe was a liquor warehouse; Federal Liquors??? Could be wrong on the nature of the business. The building was later acquired by the DeFeo auto dealership and used as the parts and repair shop, not using rail service. A branch off the branch at Danforth Ave crossed 440 to serve a large factory complex there. From what I can recall of the remants in the 60's the branch must have been very active with quite a few customers at one time.

Note that the Lehigh Valley acquired the Morris Canal around 1871, undoubtedly both to limit competition for coal movements and to acquire the land for projects such as this branch. Very helpful map site - thanks for passing that along!
