Found that engine by accident and took pictures some 15 years ago.

It has a thin coat of orange over the original paint, you could make out the stripe and lettering on it. I think if I were them I'd try powerwashing it or maybe see if someone would donate the time to media blast and I bet it looks fairly decent with no need to repaint.
