Can anyone explain what the McMyler Sidecar dumper did at Port Richmond, pier 18? Any good pictures or references I can consult?

Thanks in advance

I think it rotated hopper cars sideways until they were almost upsidedown and the contents could fall out into ships.

An aerial view circa 1970 can be seen here: http://www.planphilly.com/area/Richmond
Click on the picture "Old Pier 18"; (the one labeled "Richond Coal Wharves" is really the float bridges for the car ferries).

The Reading also put out a nice 32 page booklet in the early 1950's entitled "Port Richmond Philadelphia". It has pictures of many of the modern facilites the port had to offer including Pier 18. I don't have the ability to scan it at this time, but the captions on the four pictures describe the operation of the McMyler:

"Loaded car is ready to be pulled up the incline by cable, while an empty returns by gravity on the adjacent track."

"Coal in the car picked up by the cradle is being dumped into the pan. Note there is no long drop to cause breakage where sized coal is being handled."

"The telescopic chute is being lowered into the ship's hold preparatory to delivering coal in a continuous stream from the pan."

"The trimmer can be turned in all directions to load all parts of the hold without necessity for manual trimming."

Come see the model this weekend!

The Garden State Central Model Railroad Club, Inc. of Asbury Park will host its 44th Annual Open House this October. The event will feature a huge HO scale train layout with a 300 foot mainline traversing four rooms. A multimedia presentation and white elephant table will also be featured.

Trains roll behind the the infamous Coney Island Texas Weiners in Scranton, past the well-known blue gas tank in Allentown and call on the docks of Jersey City... all in 1:87th scale!

The Port Richmond Reading Company booklet also shows a box car dumper for grain. The photo doesn't show the whole boxcar, though. Recently I had on Tyburn Railroad a more modern example of what must have used that dumper. Mid West Car MWCX 100074, formerly Union Pacific, is a 50 foot long end dump boxcar! One end swings from overhead hinges to release the contents when the car is tilted towards that end. This one has modern plug doors so that heavy paper inner grain doors aren't needed to prevent the product from getting caught in the doorways. It also has a removable roof so it can be loaded from chutes. Right now, it is hauling scrap metal, and the roof has been left behind.

Come see the model in action!

A milestone in model railroading will be celebrated the last two weekends of October as the Garden State Central Model Railroad Club, Inc. of Asbury Park, NJ marks its 45th anniversary with their annual open house.

The club’s large HO scale layout will be operating with multiple trains. There will be a slide presentation on the history of the club, and a white elephant model train sales table as well.

Children and their families are welcome, as there is something for everyone to enjoy. Railfans will note scenes modeled after Scranton and Bethlehem, PA and Jersey City, NJ. The layout features areas of the DL&W, CNJ, LV and Laurel Line railroads.

Highlights include the Bethlehem Steel mill and the one-of-a-kind operating McMyler Coal Dumping Machine.

The club is especially interested in meeting former employees of Bethlehem Steel, the Jersey Central railroad and anthracite mining. Modelers wishing to join may learn about how to apply.

The display is open:
Friday October 17 & 24 from 7-9PM
Saturday Oct. 18 & 24 from 12-4PM
Sunday Oct. 19 & 25 from 12-4PM

The club is located on the corner of Deal Lake Drive and 8th Avenue (608 8th Avenue) on the north side of Asbury Park. Those interested in taking the train have a one mile walk from the NJ Transit station in Allenhurst.
